Stephanie Van Aken (°1990, Mechelen) is a dance artist, researcher and teacher from Belgium. She holds a degree in contemporary dance and performance from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance and a master’s degree in Theatre and Performance Studies with a minor in Ethics from the University of Ghent. As a dance artist, she appeared in the works of choreographers such as Maya M. Carroll, Matej Kejžar, Renan Martins, Yuriko Suzuki and Anton Lachky amongst others. As a teacher she gained experience teaching ballet, contemporary dance and improvisation to children and adults in various contexts. As a researcher she has published articles on documentary film in Documenta – Tijdschrift voor Theater and conducted a research about the amateur performing arts in the frame of her internship at Het Firmament, Centre of Expertise for the Cultural Heritage of the Performing Arts in Flanders. She also worked as a communications intern at Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond and as communications manager for GRIP (the choreographic platform led by business manager Klaartje Oerlemans and choreographer Jan Martens).
Currently she is working as a dancer in artistic projects by Nelle Hens and Maya M. Carroll. She is also developing her own work as a dance artist called ‘Rough Magic’. Aside from dancing herself, she is active as a teacher in dance, improvisation and bodywork/body awareness.
